Dream Holidays...

An average of 300 days of sunshine per year make South Tyrol an ideal holiday destination.

The southern peaks of the Schnalstal Valley start in the Central Alps close to Merano.
Five picturesque villages - Katharinaberg, Karthaus, Unser Frau (Madonna), Vernagt and Kurzras - are dispersed along this alpine valley and offer mountain, sport and culture fanatics many opportunities to be active.

As the Schnalstal Valley is situated on the south face of the Alps, it has a mild climate that makes it especially appealing. Precipitation is low and the snowfall depends on the altitiude.
Karthaus, the main village in the Schnalstal Valley, with the town hall, bank, post office, doctor and clinic, as well as a general grocer and a bakery.

The Monastry from 1326 till 1782
In this period about 15 monks lived in the Kartause Allerengelberg. After the monastry was dissolved due to the reform politics of Kaiser Joseph II, the population could acquire ownership of the former monastry buildings.

Sport Throughout the Year

The Schnalstal Valley is not only in winter a sporting paradise for skiing, crosscountry skiing and snowboarding. The high altitude above 3000m enables pistes to be open in summer. The valley is also an ideal starting point for ski tours and snowshoe trekking.

In summer the spectacular mounain ranges anticipate hikers and nature lovers. Horse riding, canoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking are futher acivities for adventurers.

Hiking and Nordic Walking in the Schnalstal Valley in the fascinating mountain landscape of the Texelgruppe Nature Reserve - this is a genuine alpine experience.

240 km of Hiking Trails...

Experience unspoiled mountain scenery from the place where the Iceman was discovered to the summits of the surrounding Oetztaler Alps and along the Meraner Hoehenweg.

A net of 240 km marked hiking trails stretches from the vineyards at the valley entrance to the icy heights in the Oetztaler Alps.

The Vinschgau Rail

100 years after its opening in 1906 and after being out of service for many years, the Vinschgau Train from Merano to Mals is once again in operation. It has not taken long for the Vinschgau Train to become a favourite tourist attraction, after all it passes through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery that waits to be explored.

Bike and Rail

18 train stations - small architectural jewels that are protected as monuments of historical interest. They are the ideal starting points for hiking and cycling trips into the South Tyrolean Alps.
Take advantage of the new offer of the Vinschgau Train and explore the Vinschgau in a combination of bike and rail. There are six places along the train route where you can hire bicycles.
