The southern peaks of the Schnalstal Valley start in the Central Alps close
to Merano. Five picturesque villages - Katharinaberg, Karthaus, Unser Frau
(Madonna), Vernagt and Kurzras - are dispersed along this alpine valley and

As the Schnalstal Valley is situated on the south face of the Alps, it has a
mild climate that makes it especially appealing. Precipitation is low and the
snowfall depends on the altitiude. Karthaus, the main village in the
Schnalstal Valley, with the town hall, bank, post office, doctor and clinic, as
well as a general grocer and a bakery. The Monastry from
1326 till 1782 In this period about 15 monks lived in the Kartause
Allerengelberg. After the monastry was dissolved due to the reform politics of
Kaiser Joseph II, the population could acquire ownership of the former monastry
buildings.
Sport Throughout the Year
The Schnalstal Valley is not only in winter a sporting paradise for skiing,
crosscountry skiing and snowboarding. The high altitude above 3000m enables
pistes to be open in summer. The valley is also an ideal starting point for ski
tours and snowshoe trekking. In summer the spectacular mounain
ranges anticipate hikers and nature lovers. Horse riding, canoeing, rock
climbing and mountain biking are futher acivities for adventurers.
Hiking and Nordic Walking in the Schnalstal Valley in the
fascinating mountain landscape of the Texelgruppe Nature Reserve - this is a

240 km of Hiking Trails...
Experience unspoiled mountain scenery from the place where the Iceman was
discovered to the summits of the surrounding Oetztaler Alps and along the
Meraner Hoehenweg.
A net of 240 km marked hiking trails stretches from the vineyards at the
valley entrance to the icy heights in the Oetztaler Alps.
The Vinschgau Rail
100 years after its opening in 1906 and after being out of service for many
years, the Vinschgau Train from Merano to Mals is once again in operation. It
has not taken long for the Vinschgau Train to become a favourite tourist
attraction, after all it passes through some of the most spectacular mountain
scenery that waits to be explored.
Bike and Rail
18 train stations - small architectural jewels that are protected as
monuments of historical interest. They are the ideal starting points for hiking
and cycling trips into the South Tyrolean Alps. Take advantage of the new
offer of the Vinschgau Train and explore the Vinschgau in a combination of bike
and rail. There are six places along the train route where you can hire
bicycles.
