Brief history of the Alps
It all began around 175 million years ago when the African continent broke
away and was pressed against Europe…but let us quickly leave this period. After
all, we at “Relais und Alpen” do not intend to give you a science and history
lesson but to present to you art monuments and sights to see on your vacation in
the Alps. Let “Relais und Alpen” inspire you. We wish you pleasant anticipation
as you explore trails and routes through the Alps...all of which were once
exhausting, rough, narrow, steep and dangerous. Starting in the age of the man
in the Similaun Glacier…
Come visit us and experience the Alps. Follow us on ancient trade and mail
routes, discover the treasures of the past and relays by the wayside.
Historic Routes

The Eisacktal-Brenner Route
Italian flair and the down-to-earth Tyrolean attitude define the valley between Bozen and Brenner. Knight’s castles border the road.

Chiemgau-Salzburg Route
South-East Bavaria, the Chiemgau and the Berchtesgadener Land were beautifully sculpted by the ice age to resemble an oversize open-air theatre.
|
Medieval Vinschgau Route
It is the only Roman road over the Alps with a name still known to us today, as shown by the discovery of Roman milestones in the Vinschgau.
